Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

Hi Parents,

In the Blue Room for the past two weeks we have been talking about transportation and different types of vehicles. We also had discussions about things with wheels that we can ride on land like in a wagon, on skates, bicycles, skateboards, scooters, motorcycles, and cars.

We rolled our cars in paint and made car tracks.

Most of the boys piled into the Creative Minds Fire Truck to follow Chief P's lead to go put out fires. Of course they were pretending to be superheroes with magic powers so this made saving people a lot easier.

During journal time we drew something that had wheels. A drew a carriage made out of a pumpkin.

And E made a big green semi-truck with lots of wheels.

Our friend E brought a book about trains and we decided to have our circle and story time outside to enjoy the beautiful autumn weather.

Now that we are familiar with the names of the different train cars it made playing trains a lot more in depth. The conversations about steam engines, freight trains, tank cars to bring gas, the box cars that had things to deliver, and the caboose were so neat to listen too. We also made a train with our bodies when we lined up to go outside a few times. We would all stand in a straight line and put our hands on the shoulders of the person in front of us -- choo-choo!

Stop lights are a big part of getting from point A to B in cars, and a lot of the children in our class already knew what red, green, and yellow stood for.

For this project each child ripped their colored paper into little pieces and glued them into their three circles. This strengthens the muscles in our hands that will help us when we are writing.

We will be playing Red Light, Green Light this week to see if we remember what each color stands for. :)

Last week for sharing our friend S brought a puzzle of a train, and we really enjoyed working on the puzzle during centers. It is so great to see the children work together on a puzzle because you definitely see them collaborate and be a team. Thumbs up to a job well done!!

The garbage truck stops by our school and we always get soo excited to watch it empty our dumpsters so we decided to make our own. We read a book about garbage trucks and they really are strong machines to compact all of our recyclables and garbage. We scrunched our own garbage for our garbage trucks.

The garbage trucks turned out awesome and had many components to making them: smashing the garbage, cutting out the waste management logo, using a glue stick to put the truck together, and then lastly gluing our garbage in the truck.

One afternoon we started making a street and all the things that go on the street, including cross walks, stop lights, stop signs, parking spots, and buildings like a vet, a hospital, a train station, and a rail road crossing.

We continued to add many new things throughout the week.

The streets were tested out with our hot wheel cars and they fit perfectly in the parking spots and followed all of the street signs. Our street is now on our wall, Please feel free to check it out.

The sky is the limit in our class! As you may recognize this was previously used as a ball run with ping pong balls but as we got interested in cars it became a race track. So we decided to paint the streets and soon we will be adding street signs. We put the cars through the track on the ground and then picked it up to test how the cars would do -- many of them fell out! ;)

A very special thank you to two of my girls A and S for taking it upon themselves to clean up our Art Corner. We are working on taking care of our community (our classroom and everything in it), and we practiced putting things in the right place and classifying what is food and dishes in our kitchen. In our dramatic play area, we separated the jewelry, electronics, scarves, and dress up clothes. We want to build our blue room into a community where we clean up after ourselves, help one another, and can foresee what needs to be done and do it well.

Thank you for sharing your children with me everyday. I get excited to see where the children take us in our learning and planning process.

Hugs,

Teacher Kristina
